One secret to great photography…

One secret to great photography - Take a few hundred thousand pictures and then select the top ten to display

So one of my techniques in photography is to find a subject with potential and then just keep shooting away until I capture ‘the one’ that works. Trust me, they aren’t all beautiful. A lot of them, probably even most of them are just average or even below average captures. I sometimes joke that the secret to being a professional photographer is to take about a half million pictures and then show people the best ten.

As I was thinking along those lines this morning, the thought occurred to me that just maybe this same approach works sometimes in life. We find something that excites us or that we see potential in, and then we just start going after it. We take the shot. Sure, I’ve found that I miss way more than I hit, and unlike photography, life doesn’t have a delete button to hide the less than stellar moments. What does happen however, is that sooner or later that willingness to try again and again from different angles and in different settings or maybe with a new lens to give us a different perspective… Sooner or later we find the moment where it all comes together. Our equipment, our subject, our perspective, and our setting all fall into place and we ‘capture’ in those beautiful moments purpose and fulfillment like no other.

I guess what I’m saying is don’t stop trying. Just because your last attempt was a failure doesn’t mean that you quit and accept defeat. You get back up and you take another shot – again and again and again if necessary for as many times as you have to until you find the God-place moment in life where it all just clicks.
