Perfect Love Drives Out Fear – How to Conquer Fear with Love

How to Conquer Fear with Love - 1 John 4:18

How to Conquer Fear with Love

In the ‘How to Conquer Fear Series‘ we’ve looked at fear from several different angles.  What it is, what it’s effects are, and even tips to conquer fear.  In this final post in the Fear Series, we are going to look at what I think is the most significant verse in the Bible related to fear.  I’m going to show you How to Conquer Fear with Love.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. – 1 John 4:18

1 John 4:18 gives us the most blunt and direct approach to fear that I’ve found in the Bible.  It doesn’t gloss over it, and it doesn’t skirt around the issue.  This verse pretty much takes on a Dirty Harry approach and grabs fear by the throat and throttles it.

How Does Fear Conquer Love?

“Perfect love drives out fear.”  That sounds like a big win, but how does it work?  First of all, we have to take a look back a couple of verses to 1 John 4:16 which says, “And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love…”  God is LOVE.

Two Fear Conquering Truths About God’s Love:

  1. His Love is Selfless
  2. His Love is Backed by Limitless Power

God’s love for us is selfless.  He isn’t looking out for Himself.  He’s looking out for us.  He really does want to keep you safe from harm.  It means that He wants to see you live at your best.  It means that He legitimately cares for your well-being.  He really does want to fill your life with good things.  Just read 1 Corinthians 13 to see  more about how selfless His love is.  The reality is that His love is selfless to the point of substituting His own life for ours!

When we understand that His love is entirely selfless and fully directed at us, then we can confidently go to him for help in our time of need.  So many times, I think we secretly feel like God is punishing us or that He doesn’t care about our problems enough to help.  WRONG!  His ultimate desire is to see you live a full, free, joy-filled, and eternal life.

His love is backed by limitless power.  He is the God who set the boundaries for the ocean.  His words created an ever-expanding universe.  Through the life of Christ, we see that He heals sickness and disease.  We see that He is capable of providing for any need.  We see that He is even able to defeat death itself.

The power of God’s love is greater than any obstacle you will ever face!  Perfect Love Always Conquers Fear!

I don’t know where you are as you read this post today.  Perhaps you’re dealing with a fear that seems insurmountable and crushing.  As I write this, I’m saying a prayer specifically for you.

“God, show us your love.  You said that our fear is a sign that we don’t fully understand the power of Your love in our lives.  Right now, I pray that you would draw close to the person who is battling fear today.  Even though we can’t see you with our eyes, I pray that they would be aware of Your comforting presence as You sit down beside them right now.  Let them be more aware than ever before of Your unselfish love that died so that we could live free from fear.  I ask that as they take Your hand and invite You into their lives that You would activate Your limitless power on their behalf.  Move mountains!  Set captives free!  Restore, heal, and deliver!  Bring life to lifeless situations!  Be real in their lives and meet any need that they may be facing.  Father, I ask that as You work on their behalf in love, that You would also give them the strength to keep holding onto Your hand in faith regardless of how the circumstances may appear.  I love You, and I thank You.  In Jesus name, Amen.”
